Ultrasound machine professionals are an important part in the well-being of patients in clinics and hospitals. To get accurate diagnosis and results, it is vital that the person handling the equipment is knowledgeable, experienced and can interpret the data well. Only then can patients get immediate and proper treatment for full and quick recovery. The scope of the profession is broad, since there are now several cases and tools available.

What the Job Means

The job is ultrasound machine professionals have multiple specialities and fields consisting of Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography, Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Vascular Technology and other developing fields. Some subspecialties include pediatric and adult echocardiography, abdominal ultrasound, ophthalmic ultrasound and neurologic ultrasound. The specialties are categorized according to the primary use of diagnostic medical ultrasound on a daily basis. The standard of practice in ultrasound is counted as Certification1. Individuals who are not yet certified should refer to the scope of practice as a model of their profession and aim to become certified.

The scope of practice includes individuals qualified through professional credentialing2 and clinical and academic experience, giving diagnostic patient care and diagnostic procedures related to the case with the use of ultrasound machines. All procedures, processes and acts allowed by law, and those which the individual has adequately received education and gained clinical experience is included in the scope of practice.

What to Do

Diagnostic ultrasound professionals are expected to do assessments on patients, attain and analyze data using related diagnostic materials and ultrasound primarily, use systematic problem solving approaches and sound judgment to create reliable and quality diagnostic data to enhance patient care and recovery and give a summary of results to the referring physician to help in patient diagnosis and intervention.

Other works in the course will include patient orientation, operation of ultrasound equipment, anatomy and basic physics, medical ethics and law, pathophysiology, gynaecological technique, abdominal techniques and instrumentation. Those who study the course will learn more about the speed of sound, wavelength and frequency as these are applied on body organs and tissues. Students get to participate in lab experiments and training in ultrasound schools.

The Ultrasound Radiologist

An ultrasound radiologist will use ultrasound technology primarily to examine or treat a patient. Some features that will be studied in patient's organs include the motion, composition and shape. Other abnormalities will also be checked such as the presence of lumps, inadequate blood flow, cysts and other tumors and growths.

The ultrasound machine professionals are responsible for the safety of the patients. They are also responsible for handling the equipment properly and knowing how to identify and troubleshoot equipment problems. Patient's charts will be updated by the professionals as needed. They may also have some clerical and administrative duties according to their current position.

Nowadays, more radiologists and ultrasound machine professionals are in demand because of the growing population around the world and the continuous production of modern and more powerful equipment. Those who want to get a job will have to study the course and become accredited with the right organizations to practice lawfully. A high school diploma is required to enrol. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, several job opportunities will be available in the near future.

The profession should experience a rise anywhere between 18% and 25%. Hospitals, imaging centers and private facilities and clinics will be the top employers.
